The hotel concierge recommended it and he was right; the restaurant makes you live the real local experience, the beer, the meat, the fat and ambiance nestled in one of the capital's old theatrical halls.

It's an old house from the outside but wait until you walk inside the large hall and its phenomenal theater. Long rectangular tables set under a high roof decorated with impressive chandeliers, a space surrounded by glass windows set on a floor of rugged wood. It's old, traditional and ready to host your next beer festival or private event.

At the Augustiner Keller, you can enjoy a traditional cosy atmosphere combined with food of the highest quality all year round. From the extremely cosy Bierstüberl to the large Festsaal hall, as well as the Lagerkeller with its unique vaults located eight metres underground, this historic building has various spaces and rooms to suit a wide range of preferences and occasions.

It's one of those places where you experience tradition; huge plates of meat, risotto done their way, pretzels and beer and much more.

The menu:

  • Bavarian Specialties
  • Cheese Salad
  • Soup
  • Vegetarian and Fish
  • Main Dishes
  • Sweets

The menu has everything from meat to cheese and salads as well as one plate of risotto. The choices are heavy, fat and duck, gravy and pork and more, so prepare yourself to come here hungry.

We ordered the small beer, that wasn't small, the mixed meat platter, cheese and cold cuts. After having meat for lunch, more fat at night was a bit harsh on the body but who cares, we're here on holiday.

  • The cold platter had fresh radish, Bavarian style meatloaf, pork roast, liver wurst, blackened smoked ham, Bavarian cheese specialties, tomatoes, pickles and hard boiled eggs with pretzels. A selection of different kinds of meat you'll enjoy with butter, mustard and a pretzel.
  • The cheese platter is generous as well. A selection from around Bavaria. Some are smooth others a bit harder, a few resemble the one you can have in Holland. An interesting nibbling plate.
  • Pearl barley risotto with Parmesan cheese, braised vegetables and tomatoes. It's not a rice risotto, but barley and it works. I was shocked while having the first bite because the plate looked like normal risotto and was soon addicted to it as I finished the order. Tender and juicy, moist and filled with flavor. Melted cheese and cream in a plate that's really fulfilling.
  • Mixed platter: Suckling pig, grilled bratwurst, pork knuckle, roasted duck with gravy and sauerkraut. That's thousands of calories in a plate where a tender duck, a crusty pork and a rich meat come together accompanied by a chunk of local potato dumpling and some gravy.

The good thing is that plates are generous and tasty using fine quality ingredients. The minus is that everything here lacks finesse.

Experience Munich at Augustiner Keller. It's only a minute's walk from the central station.
