Foods that made Michigan famous

It is a known fact that Michiganders love to eat! That fact probably has to do with the climate in the city. Namely, winters here are long and cold, so it is no wonder why so many people are drawn to eating hearty meals. Luckily for them, Michigan does not disappoint when it comes to delicious foods – whether sweet or savory. If you are visiting Michigan anytime soon, for a sightseeing road trip or a football match, there are some foods you should not miss out on. The same applies to moving to Michigan - you cannot call yourself local until you try out all the city's specialties. Thus, without further ado, here are some mouth-watering foods that made Michigan famous around the world.

Detroit-Style Pizza

Let's get one thing straight - no person in the world dislikes pizza. It is tasty on all levels, and most importantly - it comes in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. We can all agree, you can never get enough of pizza! But, what is so special about Detroit-style pizza? First of all - its shape. Unlike regular round pizzas, this pizza is square-shaped. Moreover, its thick crust, also known as the deep-dish crisp crust, is filled with three toppings - tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and of course, pepperoni. The best part is that you can find this pizza pretty much anywhere in Michigan, and you will not have to worry about its taste. All pizza masters in Michigan have mastered the art of making it.

Pasty

Pasty, not pastry! All Michiganders will tell you that the pasty is a staple in the entire state. Students eat in on their lunch breaks, parents bake a bunch and then freeze it for when in a hurry, party-goers eat it after clubbing, etc.; you get the point. So, what is a pasty? A pasty is a pastry richly stuffed with various fillings. Some of the most popular fillings include beef, pork, or chicken meat, cooked with carrots, onions, and tomatoes. Locals also like to top their pasties off with some hearty gravy or ketchup. You can get them almost anywhere in Michigan, just like the pizza mentioned above. In restaurants, fast-food corners, or take-out places.

If this is making your mouth water and you're planning on moving here, know that Detroit has reliable experts that can help with those heavy boxes. Hiring local movers will allow you to start exploring the local food scene right away instead of dealing with boring relocation stuff.

Coney Dog

Of course, a hot dog is not unique to Michigan. It is popular pretty much everywhere in the world. Americans love hot dogs so much that they even celebrate their day! However, Michiganders have decided to put their spin on hot dogs and thus create 'coney dogs' - one of the foods that made Michigan famous. Unlike regular hot dogs that are basically sausages, served in a bun and topped with mustard, Michigan's coney dogs have coney (chili), pickled onions, and gherkins. Coney Dogs are so appreciated in Michigan that there are many restaurants (yes, you've heard it correctly, restaurants) that specialize only in making five-star coney dogs. Of course, you do not have to go to these expensive restaurants to buy a coney dog - you can get in on almost any corner.

Wet Burrito

Once again - the burrito did not originate in Michigan, nor is it eaten only here. However, locals have decided to experiment and play with ingredients and create some foods that make Michigan famous. And the wet burrito is one of those foods. Its ingredients, fillings, and toppings are pretty much the same as in any burrito - in a tortilla, there is beef, cheese, beans, rice, onions, and hot sauce. But what makes this burrito unique is that it is smothered in a red sauce made of tomatoes and chili peppers - hence the 'wet' in the name.

This burrito is especially popular in Michigan's bigger cities, such as Detroit. But, that does not mean that you can't find it in smaller areas. Quite the contrary, some small towns like Novi pride themselves in making this style of a burrito. So, if you are moving here and need some 'fuel' in order to settle in Novi in no time, you know what to do. Local movers in Novi will help you unpack and maybe even suggest a few good food joints.

Traverse City Cherries

Traverse City is another city in Michigan that can pride itself in foods that made Michigan famous. Unlike other cities known for their fast foods, this one is known for its sweet, healthy, red cherries. From these cherries, the locals make drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), jams, sweets, hard candies, and even salsa. Some people love them so much that they incorporate them in all their breakfast, lunch, and brunch ideas, whether for kids or guest. Traverse City is also the host of the National Cherry Festival every year in June and July. So, if you love cherries, do not miss out on this event - you will get a chance to try all sorts of dishes made with cherries and mingle with cherry-enthusiasts for two months.

Meta Description: Be sure to try the following foods that made Michigan famous, whether you are moving here or just visiting - you will not regret it.
