Celebrating decades of the same food and the same waiters, Downtown is your neighborhood restaurant where tradition is respected the old-fashioned way. I’ve been brought here by my parents since 1986, and today still visit whenever I feel like eating homey uncomplicated food. I love it for the service, for the food I’ve got used to, for the warmth and non-smoking zone. Tonight I have summer in Downtown Kaslik.
What’s great about this place is most importantly the attention given to accustomed guests. They know us by heart, the drinks we like and the food we usually order. The restaurant has been upgraded with a glass wall in the middle cutting the restaurant in half between a smoking a non-smoking space.
The same valet people for as long as I remember, walk the alley and reach the thick heavy door. High and low tables, dark wood, walls of wine bottles, the Iberico ham, a display of cakes, warm lighting, a long bar and the famous salad bar which has been moved from the smoking space to the non-smoking area.
Have a beer served in the big old glass or a coca-light and follow the ritual... start with the edamame, wait for the warm bread basket to land on the table with tapenade and Bridel butter, have a portion of shrimp dumplings -probably the best in town and wait to be served. I love the edamame, Add salt and enjoy them, as well as the dumplings, sticky and well cooked.
The tartuffo Pizza, the same one served at Mozzarella Pizzeria which has unfortunately closed two decades ago. A skinny and crispy pizza topped with cheese and truffle cream. Add white truffle oil to double your pleasure.
Sushi has clearly evolved from big pieces to art rolls each prepared with dedication and attention. Finely sliced salmon, chili pepper salmon rolls, ripe avocados and crunchy cucumbers decorated with style using mustard leaves to decorate the plate. I enjoyed the rice quality, the balanced flavors, and equilibrium of ingredients, each adding a character to every roll. I was never a fan of Downtown rolls until tonight.
Salmon tagliatelle which I asked to be changed into Spaghetti, served into a signature bowl plate, a load of salmon, a creamy sauce and a large quantity of spaghetti which is, unfortunately, a bit overcooked. Even though it could have been better, I enjoyed it.
I like it here, like always. Haven’t been here for the last three years but hopefully will come back more often.
