Located on the corner of Broadway and Bleecker street, Coco and Cru serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a bar ambiance. Full at lunchtime on a Thursday, it seems that the food here is good. Even though I was not happy with the very strong smell of fried food haunting the place, I stopped for a bite, sat at the bar with a view over the action in the street and waited to be served. Not the best of welcomes though...

Food smells exceeding the normal tolerable level, music with a beat, people smiling and speaking loudly, dimmed lighting... and waiters not wearing uniforms! Nothing around here inspired me.

Let’s eat:

  • The breakfast roll, served on a wooden board: two fluffy burger buns, between them a handful of maple bacon, a tiny bit of house-made barbecue sauce and a sunny side up egg. A good sandwich served with a salad on the side loaded with onions. I would have added more sauce to the bun and used fewer onions. The bread provided by Balthazar is excellent.
  • The açai bowl is more of an açai soup! Very far from what a real açai smoothie creation should be, the berries are mixed with ice or water creating an unpleasant watery mix. That mix is topped with blackberries, bananas, granola and peanut butter. A very strange mix of textures... The açai should be thickened by adding almond milk to it or simply blending the peanut butter with the frozen açai. The chef should try the one at “Pure Green” for a quick comparison.
