Refined is the best word describing breakfast at the luxurious and iconic, hotel des Bergues of Geneva. Served at the fine-dining restaurant located on the ground floor facing the bar, breakfast is served every morning from 06:40 am until 10:30 am. Enchanted by soothing music, I enjoyed a great start of the day seated at a round table, under a big glass chandelier with a view on the lake.

A classy buffet is set at the entrance before reaching the dining room. On wooden tables, find a selection of cold cuts, salmon, cheeses and cereals: probably like any other hotel but The Bergues presents them with class.

Details: silver cutlery. White napkins. Flowers decorate the table, silver boxes for the sugar, butter engraved with the B logo. Flowers add a touch of color. Spiegelau water glasses. Blue leather sofas. Mirrors and paintings decorate the space. It’s good to know that this restaurant serving Italian food for dinner has a Michelin Star.

Bresaola and grilled chicken served on a stone box. Three kinds of smoked salmon. Three kinds of cold cuts. Three kinds of cheeses. Three kinds of yogurt in a cup. Parmesan cut in cubes. Fresh mozzarella with grissini and cherry tomatoes. Cereals and nuts each with an engraved spoon showing the item’s name. Croissants, bread, pies and special creations of which the croissant pretzel, the Cruffin (croissant-muffin) and the almond croissant. Yogurt and fruits, also presented in a classy way especially the yogurt parfait in a globe.

The cruffin reminded me of San Francisco, of Mr.Holmes the creator. Flaky and crunchy with enough air bubbles inside, giving it an airy feel. The almond croissant is stuffed with frangipane cream. The pretzel croissant topped with sea salt has a savory touch with an enjoyable chewiness; a premiere for me. I created my own croissant sandwich with mustard, ham, and cheese.

Food ordered from the kitchen looks great but doesn’t taste as much:

  • Eggs Benedict on another hand looks awesome but doesn’t taste as good. Firm and chewy English muffin, not enough hollandaise and thin salmon. It’s good enough but not something I’ll order again.
  • The pain perdu looks awesome! Tender and moist on the inside served with maple syrup, but unfortunately chewy on the inside.

Yogurt parfait is prepared in a glass sphere. I added granola, muesli, nuts, and seeds with a drizzle of honey; it’s so yummy! The almond croissant is your ticket to ecstasy; I’ve rarely enjoyed something that good!

I was happy to be pampered by the staff: they greet, welcome, smile, take care of tables, remove plates and keep smiling because breakfast is the most important part of the day. Starting breakfast at The Bergues will draw a smile on your face.
