BAROUD: Hummus, Foul Mdammas and Msabbaha In the old souk of Tyre (Sur) in south Lebanon located on a 1 minute walk from the fishermen port is the famous Baroud. An authentic breakfast spot that opens from 05:50am until 11am only serving the best Foul, Hummus and Msabbaha (Fava beans and Chickpeas). A low ceiling, plastic chairs and wooden tables in the simplest setup you can imagine are three men, professionally serving you the old traditional Lebanese breakfast. A journey that starts few meters away, approaching Baroud attracted by the rich mouthwatering aromas of cooked peas. In the restaurant is one cooking station divided into three areas: The Foul and Msabbaha station where mixes are prepared in large stainless steel jars and maintained on a low fire until the quantities last, the hummus station where chickpeas and tahini are mixed and the authentic Lebanese thick bread station (Brown and white). With every order, they offer you a plate of vegetables (tomatoes, thyme, onions, beet root and lemon) and a unique plate of chili pepper. That is all you need to enjoy and appreciate what can look like a heavy breakfast... It was actually not; It was tasty and perfectly prepared that I continued my day smoothly. Baroud has been known since it first opened more than 50 years ago to be the meeting address for many international and political figures, some of which the president Camille Chamoun. Everything is simply Yummy, fresh and delicious like nothing you've ever tried before! For only 5$ per person, expect to eat like a king. More info about the only three items they serve:
  • Foul Mudammas: alternate spellings include ful medames or ful mudammas, or simply f?l, is an Egyptian/Sudanese dish of cooked and mashed fava beans served with olive oil, chopped parsley, onion, garlic, and lemon juice. A staple meal in Egypt/Sudan, it is popular in the cuisines of the Levant.
  • Msabbaha: it's a Middle Eastern chickpea platter. This dish is heavily inspired by the love of hummus, and is in fact so close to it, it shares all of its ingredients. Including hummus! Unlike hummus, it is served hot or warm. Though it doesn't share the former's popularity, it is well loved where it can be found.
  • Hummus with Tahini:  it's a Levantine Arab food dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt and garlic. Today, it is popular throughout the Middle East and in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe.
Fresh bread, a la minute preparations served hot, and a street ambiance in the heart of one of the world's oldest cities... Baroud is a must try at least once in your life.
